At Emi Piano Studio, music theory is fully integrated into every piano lesson at no extra cost. We believe theory should be learned alongside practical playing, helping students understand the music they're performing.
For students who would like additional support, standalone music theory lessons are also available. These are ideal for students preparing for exams, strengthening their reading skills or building confidence in music theory.
Why is music theory important?
Music theory is the foundation of musicianship. It helps students to:
For students following the ABRSM pathway, music theory becomes increasingly important. A pass in ABRSM Grade 5 Theory (or an accepted alternative qualification) is required before taking Practical Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Included in every lesson
All weekly piano students receive music theory tuition as part of their lessons at no additional charge. Theory is introduced gradually and in a practical, engaging way, ensuring students develop a strong musical foundation alongside their piano playing.

Below are answers to some of our most commonly asked questions. We also encourage all parents to read our Studio Policy Agreement carefully when enrolling. It forms a binding agreement between the studio and parent/guardian, ensuring everything is in place for a smooth, enjoyable and successful learning experience, helping achieve the best possible outcomes for your child's musical journey ✨
Age 5 is a general guide, but every child is different. During the Intro Lesson, we assess readiness based on factors such as maturity, attention span, and physical development. We welcome complete beginners as well as children with previous musical experience.
Beginners lessons are 60 minutes. Lessons in our Grade 1–8 programme are either 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the student's level, goals, and individual needs. In addition to each student's regular weekly lesson, we also offer PAYG top-up lessons when needed, for example for extra exam preparation or additional support.
At least 20–30 minutes, 4 times per week. From Grade 2 onwards, we typically expect around 1 hour of daily practice. Consistent practice is one of the biggest factors in a student's success, alongside regular lesson attendance, a good practice routine, and parent support. Like any skill, the more your child practises, the more they will progress and enjoy seeing their improvement.
Every child progresses at their own individual pace. Most students complete our beginners programme in 18–24 months, reaching approximately Grade 1–2 standard. Regular home practice and consistent attendance have the greatest impact on progress.
Many parents underestimate how much is involved in learning an instrument. In addition to exam pieces, we ensure our students are also taught a broad repertoire, develop strong sight-reading, technique, theory, creativity and more. Our comprehensive, holistic approach develops confident, independent pianists with skills for life.
While many students take ABRSM grades and do brilliantly, some simply play for the love of it. We build the path around your child's goals.
Yes, students are encouraged to take part in our recitals and care home performances, building confidence and stage presence in a warm, supportive environment. For those who choose to enter music festivals and competitions, we provide specialist coaching to help them perform at their best. Our students have won medals, trophies, awards, honours and prizes.
Missed lessons are not refunded or rescheduled, even with advance notice. Your child's lesson time is reserved exclusively for them each week, and our teachers are paid to reserve that time in advance. As our timetable is full with a waiting list, missed lessons cannot be reallocated. Regular attendance is key to steady progress, which is why we follow Bromley school term dates to help families plan ahead. Please read our Studio Policy Agreement for full details.
