Piano 1:1 lessons for Children (Grades 1-8)

Keys to Success: Your Child's Piano Journey

We offer a well-structured piano pathway designed to set students up for long-term success.

Stage 1: BEGINNERS - GRADE 1 | Beginners Piano Classes
All beginners start in Beginners Piano program which will typically take students up to ABRSM Grade 1–2 level before transitioning into private 1:1 lessons for more advanced study.

Stage 2: ABRSM GRADE 1 to 8 | Private 1:1

Private lessons for students aged 5+ are tailored to each student and include technique, music reading, improvisation, composition, scales, rhythm, theory and performance skills - ensuring a well-rounded piano education.

Unlike many music tuition providers, we don’t just teach exam pieces after exam pieces. No shortcuts and no “fast-tracking” at the expense of proper development of core skills. Students learn a broad, well-balanced repertoire.

We proudly maintain a guaranteed ABRSM pass rate, with many students achieving Merits and Distinctions. Exams are always optional.

'24-Hit Wonder' Phenomenon

Many transfer students come to us having learned only three to four exam pieces per grade and little else - what we call the “exam factory” approach sometimes seen in music studios. They may have achieved Grade 1, 2, or even Grade 3 exams, yet still struggle to read music fluently or learn new repertoire independently. A common sign of this shortcut approach is when letters or finger numbers are written above every note, creating dependency instead of genuine music-reading skills.

Another common sign is “autopilot playing”, where students have memorised the usual exam pieces but cannot confidently start from the middle of the piece when asked, instead needing to restart from the beginning each time. Many also only perform the same exam repertoire repeatedly because they lack confidence reading unfamiliar music independently.

Unfortunately, many parents are unaware of these gaps because exam certificates can create the impression that a student is progressing comprehensively, when in reality important foundations such as reading, listening, rhythm, theory, and technical development may still be weak or underdeveloped because they have largely been skipped in favour of rushing through exam pieces.

While exams can be useful milestones and a way to assess progress, they should never be the entire goal of learning music.

At our studio, students learn to read music fluently, study a broad range of repertoire beyond just exam pieces, and are not fast-tracked through grades at the expense of secure technique or genuine understanding. Music theory is also integrated into every student’s development.

That said, we are proud to support students taking ABRSM examinations from Grades 1–8, maintaining a 100% pass rate, with many achieving Merits and Distinctions.

"True musical literacy is our priority. I've seen far too many students fast-tracked through exams who sadly cannot read music fluently. Our goal is to ensure every student develops confident reading skills alongside strong technique and real musical understanding." - Emi

ABRSM Graded Examinations

We follow the ABRSM syllabus for Grades 1–8, covering pieces, scales, sight‑reading, and aural skills. Exams are optional, with two formats:

  • Practical Grades (in-person): Perform 3 pieces, plus scales, sight-reading, and aural tests
  • Performance Grades* (online): Submit a video of 4 pieces.

Scores out of 150: 100 to pass, 120 for Merit, 130 for Distinction.

Higher grades require more commitment. From Grade 2+, we recommend 60‑minute weekly lessons. To progress to Grades 6–8, passing Grade 5 Music Theory is mandatory.

* Even for Performance Grades, we still teach scales, sight‑reading, and aural skills for a well rounded music education.
